Phunconference 3.0

Syd PHP

I love to get out in the numerous communities that I engage with during my time as a consultant in the digital applications world, and it being the festive season these Meet-ups usually are bags of fun.  I strolled down to the CMS mixer at the end of last month and enjoyed a few pints with people from all of the various CMS communities. It was a great time to share a few pints with the Drupal, Joomla!, WordPress and Magento communities –each of which love their chosen CMS for very valid reasons.

Thursday night was a bit more structured and not as much of a party, of course there was some free beer and pizza thanks to the Spinifex and Ninefold team, however this Phunconference encouraged a  lot of discourse for these young and old software developers.

Topics we are asked from the audience and then voted for to be discussed. Then people were split up into 3 groups over 4 separate occasions to discuss the various topics. You could swap between groups at will, encouraging discussion between multiple talks.

I was lucky enough to part take in 2 discussions and learn a  lot from the different members of the community.

The first was an intense discussion about mobile applications or rather the process  of using tools such as phone gap to create effective native mobile apps. A lot of discourse was generated about the subject, how the next release of ZEND will incorporate similar features to allow users to do exactly the same thing. Great topic as I was genuinely intrigued about how mobile applications have been absorbed by the software development community that have had to change their software to cater for this market. Also Drupal 8 will incorporate some amazing features to allow it to create effective mobile applications for tomorrow’s ideas.

My second sitting was the heated debate on which PHP framework is better to use and why. We had people in ZEND’s corner, people backing Symphony, hailing CAKE, exclaiming their loyalty to CodeIgniter and promoting Yii. All of which had valid arguments as to which framework allowed you to manipulate you web applications and sites better.

The main aspects of why frameworks were better suited to different peoples tastes than others were down to two main reasons, speed and simplicity. While others like the challenge of more complex frameworks to get more effective tasks done, most people are willing to sacrifice this in order to get tasks completed faster – especially in an agency environment. It was great to see some passionate people talk about the things that they love.

Unfortunately I had to leave soon after the second discussion and I missed the lightening round talks which I was going to par take in, however event organiser Dave Clark has promised me a spot on the mike next time. It was a great way to spend the Thursday evening and it certainly opened a few doors to areas of PHP that I had no idea about previously, not to mention the fact that I got to mix with some very talented people. Can’t wait till 4.0!

Market Trends Q4

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Every quarter Ambition Technology releases Market Trends. Here we pull all the relevant industry information about the current market and release it out to our clients as an insight to what is going on out there. I work very closely with a colleague  of mien Zoe Murray and together we have come up with our market trends for this quarter in the area of digital applications. Below is a sneak peak of what we have come up with before the actual document has been released!

Mobile & Frontend Development – Object Oriented programming is always been the core of mobile development. However now more than ever, companies are seeing the true value of making their sites mobile optimized. Where they have not necessarily built a dedicated app for the site/program but are making their sites responsive so that they are compatible across all devices. This has driven the demand for talented Front-end Developer’s in the market. These people will be knowledge able of not only your HTML5 and CSS3 but would now be getting exposed to newer technologies such as “Phone Gap” which is an application container technology that allows you to create natively-installed applications for mobile devices using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. This can become a more efficient alternative to a complete native app development depending on the complexity of the application.

In the market however native Mobile App developers, particularly iOS, are still preferring freelance or contract work and can demand a high day rate. From meeting with clients they are struggling to find really highly skilled iOS developers. Android developers are sending their applications from overseas. The push for moving towards android is becoming more prevalent but there is still the heavy focus on initial iPhone developers.

Front End Developers- The stronger portfolios are coming from Junior Front End Developers that are arriving on a one year working holiday visa and require sponsorship. Those candidates that are of Australian residence are either currently working or preferring freelance work which is making it more important for us to provide our clients with talent that is not necessarily actively on the market.

Joomla!/Drupal/Wordpress – While the battles of which CMS is “better” to use is always constantly raging throughout the open source community we think everyone is getting really g’d up about the release of Drupal 8 and its impact on Drupal as a whole. Drupal 8, to our knowledge has taken a lot out of a PHP framework Symphony and its core language is written in “twig”. This has sparked quite a bit of discourse throughout the Drupal community as the change of this new release will have a major effect on Drupal projects world-wide. There is certainly a push for Drupal and Joomla! developers over WordPress for longer term contract/permanent requirements. Shorter-term freelance work for smaller digital agencies are more open to taking on those with WordPress experience.

Also Drupalcon is being hosted in February next which brings major players from the Drupal world-wide community to Sydney.

Web Developers- PHP.

PHP – Object oriented programming is becoming an hot topic in the PHP industry as new developments with certain frameworks like ZEND have enabled developers to create mobile applications. While this might not have necessarily been a new thing, advances in these technologies have allowed ZEND masters to actually do this with a certain degree of ease.  Click here for more: , making them a hot demand in the market right now.

UX Designers/Information Architects

The salary expectations really are fluctuating from what companies can pay. For example mid-Senior level UX Designers and Architects can expect to earn from approx. 90-110k. Whereas Directors of UX are more the 140k plus mark. Even larger corporate companies with higher budgets are struggling to meet the salary expectations of Senior/leaders of UX Design/Architecture

We can see a clear gap in the market for talented mid-junior UX consultants. There is also a clear demand for these talented people with numerous digital agencies and organisations seeing the value and importance of having talented team of User Experience consultants.
